During the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, the whole of Europe was thrown into the maelstrom of battle. Germany, after signing a nonaggression pact with Russia, began to conquer the continent. During this time the United States had claimed neutrality, but were supplying materials to England. Germany then violated the nonaggression pact they had with Russia, and so the US began to supply them as well. On December 7, 1941, a day that will live on in infamy, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This prompted the United States formal entry into the global conflict. In February 1942, the Army Air Core announced that Miami Beach would be taken over for the training of it’s personnel. Over 300 hotels and buildings were then acquired for the billeting and training of these brave men of action. During this time the threat of espionage is at a all time high. German U-Boats were a presence off the coast of Florida and were causing damage to US shipping lanes and supply chain.
The decision was made by the OSS (the precursor to the CIA) to send in an agent known only by her code name: Daring Brunette. Her task: 1) conduct counter espionage operations; capture using any means necessary the Enigma Code machine. Her conditions: 1) under no circumstances to reveal her true identity or her mission 2) Should anyone discover her mission eliminate them. Her purpose: to aid the to the overall defeat of the Axis powers through the use of espionage.
She was stationed here in Miami, Florida as a Major in the Army Air Core. No one knew what she was doing here. People learned very quickly to stay out of her way as she seemed to even be able to tell generals what to do. She was a skilled interrogator and was probably a match for Haans Scharff, however all of her information was hidden from all except her direct superior in the OSS. She was always working, always hunting, and always on mission. On her “time off” she would be seen going to the dance halls on South Beach, and exploring Coconut Grove. She’ll show us some of her missions while on the hunt for German spies, the Enigma machine, and she’ll show us some of the great spots to hang out at night.
